School Store

The school store will operate Mondays and Fridays from 07:30 until 08:00. Items range from $0.10 to $1.50 and include items such as pencils, grippers, folders, glue sticks, and items of this nature. This school store is an Active Math Practice Experience for the 3rd graders.

Allegheny Energy Grants

Allegheny has awarded KES a $30,000 grant for the second year in a row. Mrs. Janice Hirst, third grade teacher, was notified that her proposal was one of 10 in a five state area that will be funded. Mrs. Hirst also received an Allegheny Energy Grant last year for $30000. A mobile wireless computer lab was purchased with funds from that grant.
Students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades used the lab to do research to design a butterfly garden. The garden is now being constructed on the school campus. The new grant will provide another lab and a wildlife habitat will be developed in the area between the Morgan Street and Price Street buildings.

WV CONSERVATION TEACHER of the YEAR

Mrs. Janice Hirst has been named the WV Conservation Teacher of the Year. She was recognized recently by the Monongahelia Conservation District at their annual awards banquet. Mrs. Hirst will speak at the WV State Conservation Agency meeting in Charleston October 11. A third grade teacher, Mrs. Hirst does many hands on activities with her students in order to make instruction more effective and learning more fun.

Compass Learning

Students will soon be using new Basic Skills software at KES. Compass Learning software is now installed on the school network. Teachers will be training the last week of September and in October. Students will begin using the new programs in October. This program has been adopted by the state to replace the original WV Basic Skills computer program. In order to use these new computer programs a new server and 42 new computers have been installed. The network cabling has also been upgraded. All grade level classrooms now have at least three computers that connect to the Internet. Funding for this this new hardware and software was provided through the WV State computer program and a technology grant.

SAFTEY ALERT - REQUEST

In a sincere effort to make dropping students off to school in the morning much less hazardous, we are asking that you drop students off with the passenger side of your vehicle towards the school, so it is NOT neccessary for students to cross the road and traffic. If you are approaching Kingwood Elementary from the the middle school, we respectfully request that you drive by the school, turn around, and approach the school from the hospital. Please do not drop children off at Lobb's Funeral Home because it becomes very dangerous for the kids, to not only cross two lanes of traffic getting to the school parking lot, but also due to the heavy employee traffic entering the lot to find parking spaces in the morning.

Most importantly, this will eliminate children crossing traffic in the morning. The safety of YOUR CHILD and all who attend Kingwood Elementary is our most urgent concern. Thank you for supporting Kingwood Elementary and the safety of all our students

The Safe Schools Hotline (1-866-SAFEWVA) is provided 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for students, parents, school personnel and community members.

Student Banking is every Wednesday in the muli-purpose room at 7:30.

The State Fire Marshal's Office will provide a "West Virginia Safe Schools Hotline". The number is 1-866-SAFEWVA (1-866-723-3982).
