This web site, sponsored by Americans to Ban Cloning (ABC), collects information on the human cloning issue and also tracks all the most recent news on cloning. ABC also has a succinct mission statement on the dangers of human cloning. I commend it for Congressional offices who are working on letters or talking points and anyone else who needs information on the human cloning issue.
Boycott to Protect the Unborn
Information Sheet
I am glad that you were able to find the "Boycott" web page and am pleased that you took the time to write.
Who am I?
I am the organizer of the Boycott.
I am a former Finance Manager of Ford Motor Company. In 1995 and 1996 I worked on the transaction that gave Ford effective management control of Mazda. As a result of the relationship between Ford and Mazda, I was appointed, in January 1997, by Ford as one of a group of managers to work inside of Mazda Motor Company in Hiroshima, Japan. I later became on Ford's behalf, the General Manager of Mazda's Sales, Marketing and Financial Analysis Division.
I continued working on Ford's behalf in Mazda through November 1998. It was at this time that I had become too disturbed by the abortion practice and Ford and Mazda's lack of desire to stop the practice. I resigned from my very well paying Ford/Mazda position in November 1998 in part because of their continued inaction over this issue.
Where are abortions provided?
Abortions are performed at the Mazda Hospital, which is located directly across the street from the Mazda Motor Corporation Headquarters in Hiroshima, Japan. Mazda Hospital is 100% owned and operated by Mazda Motor Corporation.
Abortions are performed two days each week.
Abortions can be obtained for any reason. Any possible reason for having a baby against a mother's will is deemed as harmful to the women's mental health. Thus almost all abortions are approved on the reason of the need to support the women's mental health.
How did I became aware of the abortion practice?
I became aware of this issue while I worked for Ford/Mazda in Hiroshima, Japan.
I first found out that abortions were routinely being carried out at the Mazda Hospital from my fellow Mazda employees. I spoke with several women employees of Mazda who told me about the abortion practice.
I later confirmed this information personally myself. I met and spoke with Dr. Miyaoka of the OB/GYN department at the Mazda Hospital. He has confirmed to me that abortions are performed at the hospital.
I spoke at great length with a woman who confirmed to me that she had an abortion at the hospital. The abortion was performed on July 4th, 1997. The woman was not married to the father of the child. The abortion was therefore approved on the grounds of supporting the women's "mental health." The baby was in perfect health.
My discussions with Ford/Mazda
I first raised the issue to management in July 1997. I sent several notes to senior Ford Motor Company officials, including Alex Trotman, former CEO, Jac Nasser, current CEO, and Bill Ford, current Chairman of the Board among others. I advised them of the abortion practice and urged them to intervene. They expressed a desire to being open to cultural differences. My later communications to them went largely ignored.
I met face to face with Gary Hexter, CFO and Senior Managing Director of Mazda, and briefed him on the issue. Mr. Hexter is also a Ford executive who has been "planted" inside of Mazda. He listened very intently to my case to halt the abortion practice but was not swayed for the need to stop the abortion practice.
No progress was made over the following 16 months in resolving my concerns. For this and other personal reasons I decided to quit Mazda and Ford Motor Companies in November 1998.
In subsequent communications with Ford, Ford has confirmed that abortions are provided at the Mazda Hospital, but only in accordance with Japanese laws. Japanese laws are such that all abortions can be approved on the grounds of a women's mental health.
Ford-Mazda Relationship
Ford is the largest shareholder of Mazda with a 34% equity stake. Ford controls the management of Mazda Motor Company though an agreement with Mazda's banker, Sumitomo Corporation, Mazda's second largest shareholder.
Ford, among other things, has the right to nominate the President of Mazda. In practice the President of Mazda is a Ford executive. The current President of Mazda is Mark Fields. Mr. Fields is also a current Vice President of Ford Motor Company. Prior to Mr. Fields, Jim Miller was President of Mazda Motor Corporation. Jim Miller was and still is a Vice President of Ford Motor Company. Prior to Mr. Miller, Henry Wallace was President of Mazda Motor Corporation. Mr. Wallace was and still is a Vice President of Ford Motor Company. Mr. Wallace was the first Ford appointed president of Mazda. He was appointed in 1996 at the conclusion of the deal on which I worked and which granted Ford effective management control of Mazda.
In addition to the President, Ford has many other senior executives stationed in very high management positions throughout Mazda.
As further proof of the tie between Mazda and Ford, I offer that Ford considers Mazda as one of the brands under its "trustmark". Jac Nasser made this point very clear in the 1998 Ford Motor Company Annual report (page 4) where he states, "We have six great automotive brands – Ford, Lincoln, Mercury, Mazda, Jaguar, Aston Martin." Please also refer to the Ford web site, www.ford.com where Ford displays the Mazda brand alongside the other brands. The parent-subsidiary relationship between the two can also be seen on many Ford Motor Company TV and print advertisements where the Mazda brand is shown as one of the brand names under the Ford Motor Company corporate umbrella. Mazda is clearly part of the Ford Trustmark.
What does Boycott to Protect the Unborn advocate?
We are not advocating Mazda or Ford to take a pro-life stance. We simply request Mazda and Ford to exit the debate on abortion. By providing abortions they have entered the debate on the pro-abortion side. Thus we advocate that they halt their abortion practice at Mazda Hospital.
The issue is not a cultural issue. Japan has a lower abortion rate than the US and has generally stricter anti-abortion legislation than the US. More importantly however, Ford/Mazda is an international company with customers, employees and shareholders all over the world. By providing abortions in one country, they offend the sensibilities of pro lifers all over the world.
