I just finished watching Stephen King's "Storm of the Century" on video, and I'm amazed at the way King masterfully weaves current topics into spellbinding tales of horror. In "Storm", King tells the tale of a little island town off the coast of Maine caught in the path of a massive winter storm. Just before the Storm hits, a Stranger comes to town and brutally murders the first person he meets--a kindly old woman--in a senseless act of random violence. Townspeople are horrified to learn of the murder, and the town Constable arrests the Stranger. Along the way to the town jail, the Stranger gives the constable a cryptic message to deliver to the townspeople: "Give me what I want and I'll go away". This message is repeated over and over again throughout the movie. After a series of horrific murders, which reveal the Stranger's awesome powers, the poor townspeople are left dazed and confused, wondering "What does this guy want, anyway?" The answer is not brought to light until the very end of the movie--I won't reveal it here so I don't spoil the surprise for anyone who wants to see the movie, but let's just say the townspeople are forced to make an extremely difficult and heart-wrenching decision. I was angered at the ending King engineered. I found "Storm of the Century" to be eerily reminiscent of today's "choice" of abortion. Like the townspeople in the movie, we, too are faced with hard "choices", to which each of us responds differently. Some of us deny there is a problem. Some acknowledge the problem, but are either too lazy, too afraid, or too apathetic to care. A few put up a token resistance. Still others fight vociferously against apparently overwhelming odds to educate people. Like the "town criers" of Stephen King's novels, I fight to make you aware of the monstrous evil passing through our neck of the woods. Only our evil is not one of King's horrific creations--our evil is Satan himself, determined to destroy every last soul on the planet. Satan is Misery personified, yearning to have company in Hell. He means to do this by sins such as abortion, infanticide and euthanasia--and so far, he has been successful beyond belief: Millions of unrepentant souls that could be doomed to perdition simply because no one cared enough about them to help them to make the right "choice" when their hour of temptation arrived. Like the characters in "Storm", real life men and women who are directly or indirectly involved in the murder of a child through abortion often go through life chained to their guilt and pain like the Ancient Mariner, who was forced to carry the unwanted albatross. There is hope, for men and women involved in abortion, and prolifers must be quick to offer it to those suffering souls trapped in Satan's snares. There is forgiveness and healing--in the person of Jesus Christ. Prolifers must remember that Satan is the true enemy, not the lost, hurting soul who stands before them, angrily shouting and uttering all manner of calumnies against them. If ever you are faced with a life-altering decision such as abortion, euthanasia, or infanticide, when your moment of temptation arrives, I pray that you heed the words of St. Paul to the Ephesians: "Therefore, put on the armor of God, that you may be able to resist on the evil day and, having done everything, to hold your ground."
