Zela Students receive "Star Points" for responsible student behaviors such as school attendance, achievement,and school behavior. The students use the points for reward activities such as extra recess or a movie.

Students have access to a school counselor once a week. Parents are encouraged to use or request this service for their children if desired.

Students and parents are made aware of the Student Code of Conduct, School Discipline Plan, and Safe Schools Plan. All students are taught their responsibilities and possible consequences for inappropriate behavior. They are also rewarded with fun after school activities for no violations of conduct or attendance rules.

All students are given the opportunity to participate in an after-school tutoring class called ZAP, which stand for Zela After-School Program. This program is designed to work in small groups with students struggling with their school work.

Students are expected to attend school on all days that they are possibly able to attend. When a student is absent, an excuse written by the parent or doctor is required on the day they return or else the child will receive an unexcused absence.

The school recognizes the huge impact that positive parent involvement has on a child's attitude and educational progress. Parents are encouraged to attend Parent Teacher Conferences and PTO Meetings. The parents currently serving on the Zela Elementary Local School Improvement Council are Sandy Dorsey, Kim Dorsey, and Tracy Young. The PTO officers are President - Trudy Steer, Vice-President - Kim Dorsey, Secretary - Sandy Dorsey, and Treasurer - Nina Mullens.

The student council advisors are: Brenda Gilbert and Peggy Benton. The students
council is dedicated to providing leadership training and service opportunities for our
students. Members for the year 2000 are:
Sixth Grade: Josh Preast and Sarah Morriston
Fifth Grade: Brandon Bailes and Shanna Snyder
Fourth Grade: Brittany Legg and Brandon Comer
Third Grade: Tim Legg and Amie Legg
The student council does peer tutoring and school service projects such as their Zela
